Why should employers embrace Traineeships?

Traineeships are the Government’s flagship programme which provide young people with the skills and experience that employers are looking for.

Skills Training UK has developed our own brand of Traineeships to appeal to employers in sectors where skills gaps and employment opportunities are emerging.

In the Midlands we identified engineering/manufacturing as a prime sector for employment opportunities. The rapid rise in engineering and automotive jobs in the region, coupled with the recommendations of the Black Country LEP and the STEM Alliance, all pointed to the fact that manufacturing and engineering skills were needed in order to fulfil the region’s economic growth plan.

These factors gave a clear rationale for Skills Training UK to create Traineeships for Industry in partnership with stakeholders and invest in a new training centre in Walsall in 2014.

In London, Traineeships for the Service Sector are meeting the strong demand for jobs in the retail, business administration and hospitality industries, and interest from London businesses has been very encouraging. Skills Training UK has developed a strong relationship with BT, who are providing work experience opportunities for our trainees at the prestigious BT Tower. We also work closely with a number of schools in West London, supporting learners who wish to enter vocational training as an alternative to academic education.

Growth of our Traineeships programmes

Since 2014 the Walsall centre has doubled in size to meet demand from young people eager to increase their chances of finding employment and from local employers who are offering high quality, four-week work experience opportunities as part of the Traineeships for Industry programme.

To achieve this level of success, Skills Training UK has worked closely in successful partnership with local Jobcentre Plus centres and with Walsall Works, the Council’s employment campaign.

We have also opened a new centre in Dudley in 2015.

In London and in the West Midlands we now offer Traineeships for Industry and Traineeships for the Service Sector to 16-24 year-olds.

What skills do young people learn on Traineeships?

Many young people leave school without the soft skills that are necessary to succeed in the world of employment. This can include skills as basic as timekeeping, communication and team-working. Traineeships have been designed to endow young people with these skills and more.

A Traineeship can last up to six months, and features education and training, as well as a high-quality work placement, all arranged by the Traineeship provider. The placement comes at no cost to the employer.

Skills Training UK’s bespoke Traineeships begin with a 10 week classroom learning programme at one of our centres.

The Traineeship for Industry includes an industry relevant qualification as well as English, Maths and ICT skills.  As well as a work placement the young people have the opportunity to gain a Forklift Licence. All learners receive one-to-one support and careers guidance.

The Traineeships for the Service Sector provides 10 weeks of classroom based learning with the opportunity to achieve a Work Skills Award and Food Hygiene certificate. The trainees then undertake a high quality work placement. The training is relevant for young people interested in working for employers in retail, hospitality and business administration.

What benefits can hosting a trainee bring to my business?

Traineeships give employers the advantage of an extended opportunity to find out what the young person is capable of and whether they are the right fit for a job or apprenticeship to fill a skills gap.

It is an opportunity to evaluate the young person’s abilities and attitude. However, there is no obligation to offer a permanent position to the trainee, and hosting a trainee comes at no cost to the employer.

Because trainees are unemployed, most are eager to work and highly determined to succeed.

National uptake of Traineeships has been accelerating, as an increasing number of employers realise the benefits that hosting a trainee can bring.

What Traineeships are available from Skills Training UK?Skills Training UK have designed two different Traineeships programmes to match the priorities of LEPs, the identified skills gaps and what employers say they need.

Our Traineeships are for 16-24 year-olds and the young people’s benefits are not affected while they undertake the Traineeship.
