Celebration Event For Young People In West Midlands | STUK

Celebration event recognises achievements of young people in West Midlands

July 11th, 2018

Two inspirational events have been held in the West Midlands to celebrate young people who have turned their lives around and achieved qualifications which will help them to progress in their careers.

On July 5, independent training provider Skills Training UK hosted the celebration events at its new training centre in Walsall, which was also officially opened on the day, and its training centre in Dudley. Young learners were presented with awards and certificates for their achievements, alongside local employers and representatives from schools, colleges, local authorities and Jobcentre Plus.

The 16-24 year-olds – many of whom struggled at school or have overcome personal challenges – have achieved vocational qualifications with the support of Skills Training UK. Learners have also completed work experience placements, qualifications in English and maths, and have a newfound confidence which has helped them to progress into employment, further education or an Apprenticeship.

In Walsall, 18-year-old Corey Ford received the ‘Outstanding Achievement’ award for achieving qualifications in maths and English and for successfully securing a job in a local fast-food restaurant. After six weeks in his new job, Corey is already aiming for the supervisor role.

Corey said: “I dropped out of college and was referred to Skills Training UK. I’ve made a lot of friends and really enjoy coming here, it’s given me more confidence and now I’m earning money and living the life I always wanted.”

The Walsall celebration event also marked the official opening of the new training centre, which moved to Townend House in Wisemore in January 2018.

Graham Clarke, Director of Education and Social Mobility at Skills Training UK, said: “I am incredibly proud to recognise the achievements and positive progress made by the young people on our vocational training programmes. They have achieved so much in such a short space of time, and we wish them the best of luck as they embark on the next steps in their careers.

“It was also a fantastic moment to officially open our new centre in Walsall, where we are developing new relationships within the local community and have a growing number of learners joining our programmes.”

In Dudley, there was an emotional atmosphere as 21-year-old Matthew Pitt was presented with the ‘Outstanding Achievement’ award for his remarkable achievements on the Mentor Me! programme, which supports young people with additional needs. Matthew has severe anxiety and didn’t leave his house for three years before joining Skills Training UK. Now, through 1-2-1 support and mentoring, he has achieved qualifications and is ready for work.

Matthew said: “I now travel to Skills Training UK every day on my own, everyone on the Mentor Me! programme is very supportive and I feel very happy there. I still have some anxiety and I need to increase my confidence, but I am now thinking about a career and going into work, which is something I never would have been able to do before.”

Skills Training UK currently has 674 learners at training centres in Dudley, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Hounslow, Ealing, Wembley and Brighton. Through strong partnerships with local employers, schools, colleges and Jobcentre Plus, it offers young people, some of whom are the hardest to reach a chance to take their first steps towards employment or continued learning.
