Keen photographer Hunter snaps up Customer Service BTEC in lockdown

After leaving Blatchington Mill School, Hunter Warnock joined a local sixth form in Brighton but felt it wasn’t the right path for him, so he made the difficult decision to leave before completing his A Levels.

Finding himself wondering what to do next, the keen photographer was recommended to our Brighton Centre by his sixth form college and soon rediscovered his love for learning – even during lockdown – and is thrilled to have progressed onto a photography diploma at college.

“The sense of achievement at the end was worth all of the hard work I put in. I would highly recommend Skills Training UK as it isn’t like any other training providers.”

Hunter was able to start his Level 2 BTEC Customer Service Practitioners Certificate at the start of 2020 because we can enrol at any time of the year.

And, like the rest of the country, he needed to adapt to a new way of learning due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

But moving from classroom-based learning to online learning proved an easy transition for Hunter, as he quickly found that he preferred learning from home whilst still receiving all the support that he needed from his tutors.

Whilst I made a great start in the classroom with face-to-face support, I found that I actually preferred learning from the comfort of my own home. I still received the fantastic one-to-one support from my tutors, just virtually, which meant I could continue to get the support I needed.

“There were also fewer distractions allowing me to really focus on my work, except for the occasional interruption from a sibling!”

With previous negative experiences during his time in school, Hunter found that his confidence towards studying had been knocked.

But pursuing his customer service qualification eased him back into learning and gave him a better mindset.

“I did all of the course of my own will and found it really rewarding the whole way through. I went from having a negative experience of studying to really enjoying the work I was doing.

“The courses are made towards supporting you and you get all the help and support you need throughout the course.”

Hunter has a real passion for photography and as part of his final studying, he completed a photography portfolio which he used to apply for further courses.

His portfolio successfully enrolled him onto a Level 3 Diploma in Photography at Greater Brighton Metropolitan College (‘Brighton MET)’, due to start in September 2020. He is looking to pursue photography and hopes to use it towards a career as well.

Suzanne Baker, Tutor at Skills Training UK, said: “It’s been brilliant to see Hunter’s confidence and his work grow. When he first arrived at Skills Training UK, he didn’t tend to engage well but soon became fully engaged and even logged in extra days to get his work done. It is great to see him achieve his qualification and put himself out there to apply for further studies.”

“Thank you Skills Training UK – you have helped me start being productive and get the ball rolling in my life again. I can’t wait to start my photography diploma in September."
