November 10th, 2015
The Leicestershire site of Meggitt PLC has been training its workforce of the future with the help of Skills Training UK, a leading UK training and apprenticeships provider. The engineering group specialises in components for aerospace, defence and energy markets and there are more than 550 employees at the Meggitt Polymers and Composites site in Shepshed.
The apprenticeship training has led to the achievement of NVQ and BTEC qualifications at Level 2 in Team Leading or Level 3 in Management and the first group of over twenty employees to complete their training were presented with their certificates at an event held on the company site on 20 October.
Meggitt Polymers and Composites manufactures seals for aircraft and oil platforms, flexible fuel tanks and coatings and other specialist products backed by strong manufacturing engineering expertise. Employees taking part in the training, which took 12 – 15 months to complete, work in a variety of shop floor operations and customer service roles.
Chris Hopper, Site Director for Meggitt PLC, said: “The development of Team Leaders is part of Meggitt’s global succession planning programme and we engaged Skills Training UK to look at how we can progress people and increase their skill levels. The training has been well received by the employees and excellent for the company and we are now investing further in the programme.”
The employees were coached through weekly, small group and 1-2-1 training sessions, learning Team Leader skills of problem solving, communication techniques and how to manage the work of a large team. Individual employees also received coaching to improve their qualification levels in English, Maths and Information Communication Technology (ICT).
Stephen Crawley, Skills Director, Skills Training UK, said: “Meggitt is a world class company and we have been delighted to work with the leadership team in devising a bespoke training programme to develop the leadership and management skills within the workforce. We are equally pleased that following the success of the first group, we are now enrolling more employees to benefit from the training.”
