Young people in Dudley celebrate career achievements at Skills Training UK

December 22nd, 2017

Young people who are turning their lives around by gaining vital skills and experience to help secure full-time employment have had their success recognised alongside local business leaders and other key partners.

The special celebration event recognised the achievements of young people in Dudley and the surrounding area enrolled on courses with independent training provider Skills Training UK.

The 50 learners – aged 16-24, many of whom struggled at school, need extra educational support or face challenging circumstances at home – all received certificates to acknowledge their progress.

They were joined by local employers and representatives from partner agencies including Jobcentre Plus, Switch drug and alcohol service and training and recruitment specialists Standguide.

By enrolling with Skills Training UK young people grow in confidence, gain new skills and qualifications and undertake vital work placements – allowing them to find full-time employment or continue their learning into an Apprenticeship of further education.

The Dudley centre, on the 5th floor of Trident House in Wolverhampton Street, has a positive environment for learners to grow and develop skills in communication, teamwork and employability, as well as gain qualifications in English, maths and ICT.

Prabhjit Singh, 22, who lives in West Bromwich, enrolled with Skills Training UK to improve his maths and English after moving from Portugal. He was presented with a Highest Achievement Award after successfully securing a place at the University of Wolverhampton to study biological sciences. He said: “When I first came to the UK it was very difficult because I didn’t have any recognised qualifications. Skills Training UK has been a great help. The tutors are very supportive, and I’ve now been able to realise my dream of going to university.”

Cheryl Jordan, 24, from West Bromwich, is now working full time at her local Asda store after completing qualifications with Skills Training UK. “Skills Training UK has been absolutely brilliant,” she said. “The tutors improved my confidence massively and were able to provide the support that I didn’t receive from secondary school.”

James Newman-Jones, 18, from Pensnett, enrolled with Skills Training UK following a recommendation from a friend. After gaining Level 2 qualifications in English and maths he has now found employment with family-run firm Conway Packing Services. James said: “When I first came here I was quite shy and I didn’t really speak to anyone – I had a bit of a negative attitude. But Skills Training UK has helped to turn that around. I’m now a lot more positive and I’m looking forward to starting work.”

Greg Ward, Assistant Works Manager at Conway Packing Services, said they had been impressed with Skills Training UK’s approach and would be taking on more learners in the future. “The tutors are very knowledgeable and genuinely want their learners to succeed,” he said. “At the same time they also listened to what we needed as a business – consistently sending us the young people with the right skill sets and attitudes to be of real benefit and make a tangible contribution.”

Through strong partnerships with employers, as well as with schools, local authorities and other agencies, including housing and health, Skills Training UK offers the hardest to reach a chance to take their first steps towards employment or continued learning.

David Ball, Dudley Centre Manager, said: “We are very proud to celebrate the positive progress that all of our learners have made since joining our programmes. It’s fantastic to see how far they have come and how much they have achieved in such a short space of time. We wish everyone the best of luck as they embark on the next steps in their careers or future education.”
