What is an Apprenticeship?
An Apprenticeship is a way to gain practical work experience while also working towards additional qualifications – and earning money while you do so. Apprentices work for real companies, receiving on the job training within a specific industry. This hands on experience is then backed up (if required) with classroom-based training tailored to your particular needs, while also being directly relevant to the industry you are in and the job you are doing.
You'll earn wages from day one and get paid holidays, just like other employees – and you'll be paid for time spent training too.
To support you through the programme each apprentice is provided with a Trainee Assessor, who has previous experience of the industry sector involved. Your assessor will visit you in the workplace to see how you are progressing and to provide ongoing support and advice.
An Apprenticeship programme from Skills Training UK can take up to one year to complete. Each Apprenticeship comprises of Functional Skills, a Technical Certificate and a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ).
So whether you have just left school, have been working for years or are looking for a new career, as long as you are aged 16 or over and not in full time education, an Apprenticeship could be the perfect solution to help you achieve more.

Why should I do an Apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships are no longer limited to construction workers or electricians. In fact, you can do an Apprenticeship in all sorts of areas from customer service or retail, to business administration or team leading; giving you the transferable skills you need to succeed whatever your chosen industry.
One of the biggest benefits of an Apprenticeship is that you are paid for your work and your time spent training – with no need for you to find the money for training.
Another major benefit is that you can start making progress in your career immediately, instead of waiting until you qualify. As a full employee you have the same opportunities as anyone else in your company for progression, promotion or taking on more responsibility.
The majority of skills you learn in classroom training will be highly specific to your industry and to the needs of your employer – which means you can put them to use and make a positive contribution straightaway.
Apprenticeships can be taken up by existing employees too, providing benefits to the individuals and their employers. Apprentices get a structured training and development programme to enhance their CV and employability, while employers benefit from the increase in skill levels within their workforce.
As an employee you could also work towards a nationally recognised qualification whilst developing your skills. Why not speak to your employer today and ask them if they offer Apprenticeships to current employees?
If not, contact us now on 0800 612 6224 for more information.
