What is an Apprenticeship?

An Apprenticeship is a structured training programme for employees at any stage of their career. They can be starting their first job, changing their job, or be advancing their skills.

Apprenticeships are available at different skill levels from Level 2 (equivalent to 5 GCSEs) to Level 6 (comparable to a bachelor or masters degree). They take between one and six years to complete, but most take no more than two years.

It makes no difference to a person’s eligibility or funding if they have previous qualifications, such as a degree, or not.

How much does an Apprenticeship cost?

You can get help from the Government to pay for Apprenticeship Training.

The amount you pay depends on whether you are a big enough employer to pay the Apprenticeship Levy (you pay more than £3 million in salaries every year) or not.

All employers must now set up a Digital Apprenticeship Service account with the Education and Skills Funding Agency to manage their Apprenticeship funding.

What are the benefits of an apprenticeship to an employer?

1.You can tailor training to suit your organisation and its individual needs

Our flexible, blended learning can be delivered on-line, in-person or a mix of the two. Our partners frequently cite our flexibility as a key part of our success.

Skills Training are great, very flexible. They come on site and they fit around us. I’ve never had any problem if I need to change the schedule, they understand how the business works.

Pam James, World of Books

2.You can get government funding to improve your employees’ skills and train new staff

  • We can support Levy payers to maximise their Levy pot.
  • SMEs can benefit from a range of financial incentives depending on their size and the number of Apprentices they take on, including full government funding for Apprentices under 18 for companies with less than 50 staff.

Find out about the Apprenticeship Levy or read more about incentives for SMEs.

3.Improved productivity

On average each apprentice brings a gain in productivity of £10,000 per year for their employer (Cebr, 2014).

4.Happier and more motivated staff

92% of employers who employ apprentices believe that Apprenticeships lead to a more motivated and satisfied workforce, while 80% report higher staff retention due to Apprenticeships (National Apprenticeships Service/Populus Research).

I really enjoy the training - I’ve learned so much about different processes and work flow and how to be more efficient. I’m more aware of how to limit defects and improve quality now, which makes doing my job a lot easier…Managers have commented that we’re working better and seem happier.

5.Greater resilience for your business

Apprenticeships can help you fill skills gaps. Now that the UK has left the EU, it is more important than ever to train young people to meet the demands of modern industry and employment. In challenging market conditions, a skilled and strong workforce can be the key to thriving.

6.Giving opportunities to young talent

Apprenticeships are a great way to support young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to develop their skills and earn their first wages on the path to successful careers.
If you are also interested in supporting young people aged 16-24 to develop their skills for the future, visit our Traineeships page to find out how you can help ignite their success by offering work experience, ‘Dragon’s Den’ style panels and more.

I’m really happy. I’d never considered doing anything like this before but I’m really enjoying working at Gerrymet and doing something that’s hands on. I can say to people now, I’m 20 and I’ve got a job, which has made a huge difference to my life.

Clinical Coding Apprenticeship helps to upskill and enhance careers at NHS Trust

The programme covers strong theoretical elements of Clinical Coding such as the importance of accuracy and consistency in recording data and what we use the data for. This isn’t typically covered in the standard Clinical Coding course, mainly due to time and the intensity of the practical coding undertaking, so to have a programme that can encompass both elements and underpin the theory is invaluable.
